A power transmission brake is a device for applying force to slow or stop the motion of a machine. Brakes are also used to prevent a machine from moving again. Brakes or clutches are built into the design of most power transmission drives. A brake can be an external component, located off the motor or gearbox, or the brake can be an internal component, built into the motor (or gear motor). There are many types of brakes used in power transmission applications. Some of the types available are air brakes, disc brakes, drum brakes, electromagnetic brakes and hydraulic brakes.
