Torque Limiters
A torque limiter is an automatic device that protects mechanical equipment, or its work, from damage by mechanical overload. A torque limiter may limit the torque by slipping or uncouple the load entirely. The action of a torque limiter is especially useful to limit any damage due to unexpected and sudden stops or jams.
Torque limiters may be packaged as a shaft coupling or as a hub for a sprocket or sheave. A torque limiting device often referred to as an overload clutch. Mechanical style torque limiters are spring loaded clutches that provide protection against torque overload. High torque can damage drive system components such as the bearings, shafts, gearbox, chain, coupling or motor. A torque limiter can be set to limit the torque, thus protecting the drive system and components. Mechanical torque limiters are manually adjusted by changing the spring tension to provide consistent torque levels.
