Profile Rail
Profile rail, or linear square rail, is the smooth surfaced track that supports and guides the rolling elements of a linear motion bearing. A profile rail system combines a rail and one or more linear bearings, often referred to as a carriage. Most profile rail guides are designed with four precision-ground raceways and a slide unit with four ball circulation paths. The square configuration of raceways results in a guidance system with good rigidity able to accommodate equal load capacity in all directions.
Advantages of a profile rail guide include precise positioning, smooth operation, high load-carrying capacity, high stiffness and unlimited stroke to satisfy linear motion system demands in a range of industrial applications. Profile rail is available in a variety of sizes and configurations to meet specific application requirements. Different carriage designs can accommodate particular load and stiffness demands on profile rail systems.
It is important to note that unlike most bearing applications, profile rail carriages are not interchangeable between manufacturers. A linear carriage from one manufacturer will not run on a profile rail manufactured by another company. This is because profile rail geometries have yet to be standardized in the linear motion industry at this point in time. Interchangeability of an entire profile rail system is possible; in this case the end user would need to replace both the profile rail and the linear carriage on their equipment.
